| | BULL & BEAR PUB - SYRACUSE, NY The Bull & Bear Mission Statement:
"Historically, pubs have been the original meeting place for the local townsfolk. People gathered to celebrate, to commiserate, and to make new friends. My vision for Bull & Bear has always been to create a comfortable place where everyone feels welcome.
We carry a huge selection of brew and spirits, from the ordinary to the exotic, to accompany our classic pub fare.
Each member of our staff is always ready with food, drink and a kind word. We work to bring you the best local talent, along with regional acts for your listening pleasure."
"I've always thought that the coolest places to hang out are the ones where the guy on one side of you is wearing a suit and wing-tips, and the guy on the other side is wearing a tie-dye and Birks.
From politicians to poets, and bankers to beatniks, you'll find a friend at the Bull & Bear Pub."
- Mark Bullis, our founder

Earthman Embassy - February 6, 2009 8:48 AM
Earthman Embassy, formerly "24-hour miracle" began in late '06 when pianist George Zeitler and Guitarist Ben Taylor started playing open mic's at a local coffee shop near their school, Colgate University. Since then the band has added Mike Petersen on bass and has had a number of drummers, all of whom have died in rather unfortunate gardening accidents...except Tommy, who as far as I know is still quite alive. Anyway, over the summer of '07 George and Ben hit up the studio and recorded their first two demos entitled "Kingdoms of Secrecy" and "Rocketship." Being that bassist Mike lives in middle-earth during the summer months, Anil Sharma, (you may have heard of him from the Planestop amongst other musical experiments) stood in as a "studio" bassist. The band has played various gigs around the Hamilton Metropolitan Area, even opening for the great "Tally Hall" at Donovan's Pub and also the world famous "Harry and the Potters" last year at the Colgate Bookstore. In the 2007-2008 school year the band completed a full demo album aptly entitled "Demonstrations." The CD is available now so just ask a band member and we'll get one your way. Earthman Embassy is generally described as "refreshing" and fans often have trouble finding other bands to compare them to. The band recently played at Funk n' Waffles in Syracuse, NY. jon barnes - January 5, 2009 2:36 PM
Syracuse, NY is home to the powerful new three-piece band One False Move. Their energetic live performances in the region’s most popular club venues have earned them a loyal following across a diverse demographic since the band attained its’ ideal incarnation in February of 2008. It was then that bassist Justin Cosser and guitarist / vocalist Jon Barnes joined forces with drummer Matt Madonia. Jon and Justin spent the previous year blending their own creative styles, which demonstrated the influence of punk, metal, grunge and hip-hop, to produce a repertoire of dynamic original songs featuring addictive lyrical hooks, pounding bass riffs and intricate tempo changes. When Matt joined the team, he brought with him the technical intuition and disciplined cadence that allowed the band to finally execute the unique sound that has become synonymous with One False Move.
At a live performance, this 20-something trio unleashes a wall of sound which immediately engulfs and, in turn, mobilizes the crowd. The initial reaction is often one of surprise: the three musicians deliver their craft with the velocity, precision and depth of a much larger ensemble. One False Move demonstrates the cohesion of a seasoned band, their chemistry evident as each member intuits the other’s next move. This is manifested not only in the tight transitions, but in their complimentary and engaging stage presence. Bass player Justin’s frenetic intensity and rhythmic convulsions drive people to the front of the stage, where Jon sinks in his hooks and keeps them there with stunningly pure and emotional serenades truncated by razor-edged pledges of metal allegiance. Matt dishes out delicate cymbal work with the same precision that he runs roughshod over the double bass (and, on occasion, a monstrous drum solo). The ever-responsive and enthusiastic audience pays homage by crowding the stage, seeing and hearing with equal intensity (when not avoiding the mosh pit).
One False Move has been hired to perform repeatedly at all of the area’s hottest and best-attended music venues, including The Dinosaur Barbecue, Mezzanote Lounge, The Dungeon, Mac’s Bad Art Bar, The Ugly Stick Saloon, the Half Penny Pub and the legendary Lost Horizon, among others. To get a sense of what the excitement has been about, and to find out why their friends and fans have become their best promoters, visit one of their upcoming shows or click on “One False Move” on this page to connect to the band’s myspace page.

please note- Bull & Bear's new hours are Monday through Saturday, 4PM-2AM.
I'm looking into what the new kitchen menu is going to look like, as it is assumed to be getting trimmed down. What a great place to eat though- I sure hope they keep their chili and BBQ sauce recipes!!! And sweet potatoe fries!

AndyB - July 26, 2006 3:47 PM
I'm saddened to learn of the Bull & Bear ASCAP violations and I worry about the future of our small city's finest establishments. We all know the challenges venue owners face when it comes to owning a downtown establishment in a city that has some of the highest property taxes and utility costs in the nation. I think we could fairly draw the conclusion that one night a week of some of our citizens being able to go out and have a crack at performing some of the songs they love the most, is a drop in the ocean of the expenses these establishments face. Furthermore, I question the level of responsibility on the karaoke host's part. THEY are coming in with banks of music and SUPPLYING the entertainment. I know all about this- I have worried about my level of responsibility. I sometimes supply the Bull & Bear Pub with sound support for live bands. I have always strived to work with original bands, playing their own material. But at some point, almost every band I have ever worked with, pulls out their choice of covering a particular copyrighted song....be it well known and popular or not. The investigator's claim that ASCAP “bends over backwards” to help the venues understand what licenses are needed is completely false. I have spent endless hours on ASCAP’s web site researching their licenses and many phone calls to their offices in hopes of receiving a reasonable, distinguishable explanation of what licenses are needed, when, and what material is covered by the many different licenses available. I have never received a clear-cut answer to my questions. ASCAP makes it so hard to understand, that you never know you’re in violation until after you’ve violated one of their guidelines. If an investigator were in the room when this was happening, why would they not take action before the first violation was even completed? As far as the venue is concerned, the Bull & Bear hires a karaoke host to supply their particular form of entertainment. Could it not be said that, if someone is given a certain responsibility (IE: supply a legal form of public entertainment), that they should be held responsible for these violations? I currently view ASCAP as an association of big-name lawyers strong-arming venue owners for the benefit of not the artists, but for the benefit of the convoluted legal society within which they operate their own racket.
